Ozlem Yikici is a British-Turkish female artist, based in London UK, on a mission to create curious – boundary challenging artwork to highlight and encourage you to ‘Be YOU, in a world where we’re expected to ‘fit-in’.

A word from the artist: Welcome to YIKICI. I’m Ozlem, artist & poet, at heart. A creative soul. It gives me much joy to create artwork for you and your loved ones to enjoy. I hope these creations will bring a smile to your face and open up curious thought and possibilities to escape into another world when you need a moment to pause and take a breath.

Artist’s Statement

Ozlem Yikici is a multidisciplinary artist, predominantly working with oil paints and watercolour. She explores the relationship of abstract forms within a landscape setting. Experimenting with the Surrealists technique of automatic drawing to elicit a responsive way of creating and viewing. Her fascination in working this way started when studying at university. She took the humble doodle, a 1 x 1 inch sketch, and elevated it into a big Lifesize sculptural painting, see: A Doodle. From which point she started to superimpose doodles onto landscape imagery to juxtapose meaning of what was being viewed. The Earthquake Series is an example of this way of working, where the doodles are a metaphor for the earthquake; a debris, disrupting the visuals of a beautiful landscape setting.

Over the years her curiosity in translating the immediacy of the erratic doodle pen-work into oil-paintings became her focus. Creating form, redirecting the energy of the doodles to convey expression and emotion. This, developed over time, as she started to work with watercolour paints. The fluidity of the paint and brushstrokes captured the essence of immediacy within the pen-work she was seeking. Combining colour and automatism, she explores abstraction within landscape settings. This curiosity of capturing the essence of doodling using automatism brought an understanding of intuitive artwork. The ability to turn energies into paintings. Aura portraits. By capturing the essence of auras she has been able to create a different kind of portrait, inner world portraits. This discovery has led her to think about parameters and the boundaries put on us in society. How ‘boxed-in’ we are, that certain rules, regulations, and procedures need to be followed. […]

I saw YIKICI’s art online some years ago and fell in love with it. I love the way that her figurative art includes more abstract elements or non-realistic colours, so that through it you look at the world in a very different way. When the opportunity arose to commission a painting from her I jumped at the chance. YIKICI took one of my own photos of the rainforest and turned it into a glorious explosion of colour. I am very happy with the result and with the whole experience. Would love to commission another painting at some point, when I can find more wall space…

I’ve had my Inner World portrait on the wall for a while now and keep finding different things to love about it! It was a fascinating experience – I had a Zoom call with Yikici, who is lovely to chat to and she was gaining a sense of my personality and painting as we talked.
The finished piece is perfect. The colours are beautiful and very ‘me’ and I keep seeing different aspects of things that are important in my life within the swirls and marks. Sometimes it reminds me of my love of music… sometimes it’s like a walk through a forest in a dream.

Thank you, Oz, for my lovely Inner World portrait, it’s stunning and so nicely displayed in the mount board frame. It was very professionally done, beautifully packaged, and I loved the details such as the Certificate of Authenticity and the care instructions.
It was such a lovely experience. We did it over a zoom call at a time that was convenient for me – one hour of relaxing music and conversation, while I doodled in my sketchbook and Oz worked her intuitive magic. She’s so easy to talk to and we also enjoyed some very comfortable silences while we focused.
Oz’s portrait shows the auras and messages that she receives about my personality during the experience. She uses her intuition to guide the work and choose the colours and shapes used.
I love the combination of swirls and lines and the soft pastel pink in the background with the bolder colours and my favourite, blue.
I definitely recommend booking the experience with Oz, it is such a unique experience and would make a wonderful gift.
